HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Can you believe it is the 50th anniversary of the first organized Earth Day!? Why not do something special for the Earth today! We know that there is not much going on in the form of organized get togethers and outings, but there is so much that you could do to make it meaningful.

Check out: Earth Day to see how they are hosting a Virtual Earth Day!

Here at Sun Flour Mills, we do our best to practice sustainability. Check out these ways in which you can practice the 3 Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) with our product.

REDUCE

Reducing waste, is a big way to make an impact on our Earth. The average American produces roughly 2,000 pounds of trash per year. We offer the option to buy any/all of our products in bulk. Reduce your waste by only needing to recycle 1 box vs. 13-22 boxes. (Our internal plastic bags are not recyclable – so by buying in bulk you also cut down on that plastic that is ending up in the landfill.)

REUSE

Don’t recycle that Sun Flour Mills box just yet! There are so many things that could be made from it! If you have a few minutes and some basic supplies you can create a few fun arts and crafts activities for yourself or family!

Learn how to make 2 bookmarks and 2 mini notebooks from 1 box!

Materials:

  • 1 Empty Sun Flour Mills Box
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Embroidery Floss/String/Yarn
  • Needle
  • Printer Paper/Notebook Paper
  • Hole Punch
  • Ruler
  • Markers/Crayons/Colored Pencils for decorating

Step 1: Start by cutting your box so it will lay flat – turn it over to the inside (white).

Step 2: Cut out each face (front of box, back of box, sides of box, extra flaps).

Step 3: Recycle extra flaps.

To Make Bookmarks:

  1. Punch a whole at the top of each box side.
  2. Cut two 6-8 in. lengths of ribbon.
  3. Attach with a slip knot.
  4. Decorate!

To Make Notebooks:

  1. Fold each box face in half horizontally.
  2. On printer paper/notebook paper, draw a straight line vertically at 6 3/4 inches from the left edge. (1 sheet = 4 notebook pages)
  3. Cut along the long – keep the left (larger) section of paper.
  4. Fold the larger section of paper into fourths.
  5. Cut vertically along the center.
  6. Stack the folds and place them in the folded box front.
  7. Ready a needle with embroidery floss. (if you are super savvy, you could use a sewing machine)
  8. Stitch along the fold going through all pieces of paper and the box front, alternating in and out. Tie off the bottom and trim the end.

Final Step: Decorate!

RECYCLE

Our Sun Flour Mills Baking Mixes and Flour boxes are all recyclable. Make sure you throw away the internal plastic bag, break down your box, and put it in your recycling bin. We all can make a difference!
